Six Bavarian and eight Vorarlberger municipalities form the nature park Nagelfluhkette. This park encompasses 401 square kilometers of purest nature and is the first cross-border park between Germany and Austria.

The park's name comes from the countless more or less round stones of varying sizes, which were pressed together to form a conglomerate, the so-called Nagelfluh or "God concrete". The rocks of the Nagelfluhkette were created approximately 25 million years ago. They are deposits from former rivers, which were heaped up a few thousand meters high at the place which was at that time the foot of the Alps.

Being 24 km in length, it is a tremendous natural phenomenon, there are altitude differences of up to 1400 m in a very narrow space. While the lowest place at the Bregenzerache is only 465 m above sea level, the highest point reaches up to 2050 m. This point is located slightly beneath the Hoher Ifen (2229 m) on the Gottesackerplateau, all the way in the south of the nature park.

Countless hiking routes lead directly from Immenstadt through the nature park, ideal for an active holiday in the Allgäu. The Mittagbahn and the Alpsee Bergwelt take you right into the heart of fun. On www.naturpark-erleben.info you can find the interactive hiking map of the nature park.

To obtain the title of "nature park", several conditions must be met: Nature parks are large-space cultural landscapes, which characterize a region and which have a unique face. Inside the parks, the close connection of preservation of nature and recreation play a central role. The tasks of protection, recreation, education and regional development are all equally important.
